Causeway blues .....
There were so many photo's to choose from today. We started off in the great market in Doll de Bretagne. There are stalls selling all sorts of produce , cheeses, seafood , clothes and local sausages. The bakers was a blippers delight with many edible works of art to behold. We bought some croissants and then took them across the square to a little cafe where we had a grande cafe creme to drink with them. The proprietress is used to Jan doing this and doesnt mind as she sells drinks only.
After a lovely coastal walk from StMalo we had lunch in a small creperie which again provided a smorgasbord of culinary blips. My scallops in a snail butter sauce crepe sadly did not last long enough for me to be artistic with it.
Walking along the ramparts on a Saturday afternoon is one of the local past times in St Malo. The town suffered horribly with bombing during the second world war and was razed to the ground. Far-sightedly the towns people restored it to its former glory , ramparts and all , so it is hard to tell old buildings from new.
We went down to the lovely beach and were going to cross the causeway to the island . By the time we reached the causeway the tide had started coming in and people were running down the hill to reach it before it was covered in waves. Mary and Jan watched as Cath and I bravely stupidly ran across to the island.
People were really taking this seriously and a mass exodus from the island to main land was occurring. A crowd of French people with cameras waited on the beach for the inevitable photo opportunities.
Our bravery was short lived. After I took this shot of the chap legging it back to shore I too headed ( somewhat cooly I thought) back across. I had a lucky break with the waves and did not get wet.
A matter of 5-10 minutes later the causeway was gone. By this time we had joined the crowd photographing stragglers paddling back.
After a pleasurable trip to the supermarket ( always a treat when in France) we spent a pleasant evening in front of the fire with a huge platter of cheese and baguettes - and a selection of wines.
Who'd have thought, a beach walk, 10 degrees C in January
