The Lady with the Lamp
Two hundred years ago today Florence Nightingale was born. International Nurses' Day is celebrated on her birthday.
Florence was known as the Lady with the Lamp because of her habit of carrying a lamp when making her night-time rounds of the wards of the Scutari hospital during the Crimean war.
The lamp in the photograph is, of course, the wrong type of lamp, being a miner's lamp, but it is the only one I have.
