Day 55 - cycled to Chiswick via Hammersmith Bridge and back via Kew bridge. Much more traffic today and no cycling allowed along the Thames Path at Chiswick Mall and no jogging either. It was very busy with pedestrians at 10.30am. Edward Johnston(1872-1944) was a master calligrapher who lived at Hammersmith Terrace in a house overlooking the river. He showed an early interest in lettering studying manuscripts at the British Museum. He was the first teacher of lettering at the Central School of Arts and crafts and also taught at the Royal College of Art. He produced calligraphic alphabets for private presses and wrote notable books on his craft. His most notable design is seen, in modified form, by millions of commuters and tourists each year. He was responsible for the bulls eye symbol used by London Underground. See extras.
