The Clock Tower

At last a blue sky! I had to go over to the Western General Hospital today and I thought - Outside, in daylight, where's my camera.

This is my favourite entrance to the hospital and once I'd taken my photo I thought I should find out a bit more about it, so...

The Western was originally built in 1868 as a hospital and poorhouse (with its typical clock tower - above) for the parish of St. Cuthbert's. A lot of hospitals were originally poorhouses and I've known many an elderly patient who was mortified to find themselves 'in the poorhouse'
The new building was known as Craigleith Hospital and Poorhouse. It continued to serve the needs of the parish's paupers until 1914 when the hospital was taken over by the Army and used for the treatment of Forces casualties.

On my trip back to the Royal Infirmary we drove past the Meadows, some possible shots there but no opportunity to stop.
Now I'm no expert on modern architecture and maybe it's just me but I think the old Royal Infirmary building, which can be seen from the meadows, looks dreadful with all those glass boxes attached to it - progress?!
