Lathyrus Odoratus

Dingy skipper

The Dingy Skipper became my 15th butterfly species for the year. A rather unfortunate name for a tiny butterfly that has had a variety of unflattering names. In the 18th century is was known as Handley's Brown Butterfly, Handley's Brown Hog Butterfly and Handley's Small Brown Butterfly. These were names ascribed by James Petiver, Handley would have been the collector who brought the specimens to Petiver. Its French names are dismissive -La Grisette (the "Little Grey One") - or mysterious - "Le Point-de-Hongrie". While in German I understand it is known as "Dickkopffalter" - the "Thick-headed butterfly".
