LUGs
What I learned today: “Label Under Glass” is a category of apothecary jars made in the 1800s. There is an indent in the glass in which to fit a label always in Latin with some gold leaf and then cover with a thin layer of glass. We’ve had these forever and I never realized that. Ha. On the bottom molded into the glass is “Pat’d March 6, 1894 St Louis, MO.”
We’re having some repairs to the window and sliding door on the outside of our condo where all the glass is displayed. The last time there was any drilling , an antique glass pitcher vibrated off the glass shelf in the window and broke. So the handy man doing this work was understandably worried. SO…of course we took every piece of glass off, (which had just been washed the week before!) including these which live on a shelf above the glass doors. However, now I’ve washed these too. Many have cracks. Brought them outside to the patio to get some back light. There are a few more but these are all the LUGs.
They belonged to H’s Dad who got a degree in pharmacy (’29) from the U of Illinois in Chicago , chaining his model T ford to a tree in front of the Dean’s office while in class. (this was not popular with the Dean) He was so proud when his son (H) also went to this very place to get his pharmacy degree (’62) before going on to med school. (all at U of Illinois). I think H’s Dad worked in a Chicago pharmacy ..only one in the family to have a job in 1929…that used these and then when they went out of favor, 30s-40s, and were replace with other containers, brought some home and H’s Mom used them for rice and tapioca etc. It’s appropriate to think of him today…He would be 113 tomorrow. Miss him.
Stay at home and you never know what will come up. :-)
Extra: There are always new welcome painted rocks to discover on our walks
