Hannoversch Münden
On our way north to visit the grandfathers in Holzminden, we stopped off at Hannoversch Münden to visit the source of the Weser. The river Fulda comes from the left, the river Werra from the right, merging into the Weser ahead.
In 1899 a commemoration stone had been put up, bearing a short poem:
“Wo Werra sich und Fulda küssen
Sie ihren Namen büßen müssen
Und hier entsteht durch diesen Kuß
Deutsch bis zum Meer der Weserfluß.“
(Where Werra and Fulda osculate
They have to forfeit their names.
Here by this kiss the river Weser emerges,
German all the way to the sea.)
To the day, the river Weser is the only major German stream not shared with another European country. This fact has indeed since long lost its patriotic undertone, which was expressed in the 1899 poem.
In the extra, a view over a branch of the Fulda to the old city.
