Oban Old and new

The day got better as it went on, and we enjoyed our afternoon walk down to the seafront, which has become a habit. Looking across the bay from the North Pier to the buildings in George Street, I found myself going back in time to the 60s, and imagined myself in the Council Offices, as part of the Planning Team. On the agenda were the plans for the space between these lovely Victorian buildings – not sure why there was a space, but never mind – and much discussion took place. Eventually it was decided that these horrible white boxes would enhance the beautiful Victorian front to the town and the application was accepted.
Could this really have been the way it was? I can’t see how it could have been otherwise. This happens everywhere, so there must be something wrong with the planning process! Do our planners have no taste at all, or am I, as one of the townspeople, living in the past?

Quote of the Day:

Frank Gehry - “98% of what gets built today is sh*t.”
