The Unknown Unknown

As Donald Rumsfield famously said:
"There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know."

The Known: When we bought this house, we knew we were going to have to do some painting.

The Known Unknown: We knew that we didn't know how much it was going to cost to sort some stables out.

But this hole in the kitchen floor is one of those Unknown Unknowns.

Painter finished the kitchen last night, new worktop and tiles done last week. I was just checking the floor over before the vinyl fitters arrived when I noticed a slightly proud board. I thought I'd take a look under the floor to see wherr the joist was so I could screw it down again. Lifted this small loose board and found... wet. Not just damp, but actual wet.

Quick call to cancel the fitters, damp inspector coming tomorrow - as is all our furniture and stuff.

This one could run and run...

On the plus side - might get the stables started at the end of next week.
