MEMORIAL DAY

In the US, MEMORIAL DAY is a day to honor military personnel who have died while serving.  My Grandmother always called it 
DECORATION DAY, which honored the Union & Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War.  She had great uncles who fought on both sides, 
so she had strong feelings.  That did not change in the early 1900's when
it became a day to celebrate all American soldiers, who have died.  In 1967 the name changed to MEMORIAL DAY.

This photo is of the VETERANS PLAZA, which opened in 2002 to commemorate all soldiers who have died from our city.  Last year there were ceremonies on Veteran's Day & Memorial Day, which were well attended.  This park is open, but there will not be any events today, in this plaza.  I am wondering if it is because our town still has increasing cases of COVID-19, & the regular attendees are members of high risk groups.

In our city, there are banners hanging from the light poles, in honor of local soldiers who have recently died in current conflicts.  (SEE EXTRA)
Yesterday we took a drive to the far reaches of our county, & every town 
had these banners for their local heroes.  The fallen soldiers are recognized every day.

Today, we can expect our president to play golf in their honor.
