This is a very grand house near mine - geographically near, that is; obviously it’s socially rather distant. Anyway, its owner made a lot of money through being very clever and hardworking, acquired a Lord’s title through judicious politics, and built this ridiculously huge, rather vulgar house. I always think it’s like a story from the nineteenth century, from a Trollope novel perhaps.
