Little Russel

Another overcast day today. At lunchtime I made a detour to Bordeaux and took this picture looking over the stretch of water called the 'Little Russel' towards Jethou. Halfway across the channel is the Brehon Tower. This has always been an important navigation mark in island waters. It was built in 1856 and was home to five cannon and 35 men at a time when there was a threat from the French. During the 2nd world war there was an anti-aircraft battery on the tower. Today it is abandonned except by a colony of terns.
