End of the Road

This it it, the site of the Cold Bath! Originally this area would have been open country, but after the interest in 'taking the waters' increased it was developed to allow visitors to experience the cold bath.

As well as drinking the waters, taking baths was the next best option to cure all sort of ailments. The bath was supplied by very cold, pure spring water for bathing and 'the relief of sore eyes'.

The well had a square building built round it with a house nearby to dress and undress in, both long gone. The 'bath' probably more like a small enclosed pool and people sat in the cold mineral water. The plaque on the pillar says the water was sometimes known as St Mungo's Well and it was made a 'common watering place' by the Act in 1778. The bathing house was built in 1837 and demolished in 1974.
The area is now grassed and trees have been planted.

I have enjoyed doing this mini series. I often walk along this road, and now know a little more about the history.
