Surviving Slave Cabin, Laura Plantation, Louisiana
The attached photograph was taken several years ago during a visit to the Laura Plantation, North Vacherie, Louisiana, USA. The remnants of slavery remain, not only in museum plantations, they are alive in the streets of our cities. Perhaps, during these troubled times, considering humankind's past failures may give some direction for the present, maybe even the future.
"But as it is, we have the wolf by the ears, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in onescale, and self-preservation in the other."
--Thomas Jefferson to John Holmes, 1820 April 22
