Shhh!! RAF Winkleigh, Devon

We pass the old aerodrome on our journey to and from the Guinea Pig Spa. At first glance all you can see is the old control tower, but by standing and looking closely you it's possible to see the remains of some of the runways, some of which are used as roads for light industrial inits. Unfortunately I couldn't get the runways in my photo.

RAF Winkleigh played a key strategic role in WW2 when it was home to international pilots who flew top secret missions - including dropping many secret agents - into Europe. Hard to imagine what it was like then, the airfield is in an exposed area and the construction of the runways were complex because of the soil. We've not been there in the dark so don 't know if the drone of engines and the sound of big band music haunts the area.

This link tells its history. http://www.jackiefreemanphotography.com/raf_winkleigh.htm
