Cooktown 1770
Nine years ago today we were in Cooktown, Northern Queensland.
On 29 April, 1770, Lieutenant James Cook landed at Botany Bay, opening the way for the establishment of the British colony eighteen years later.
Leaving Botany Bay on 6 May, Cook sailed north up the coast of Australia, until he unfortunately ran into the Great Barrier Reef. His ship the Endeavour was seriously damaged, and he was forced to spend 48 days on shore near what is now Cooktown, while repairs were made.
Thus the longest time Cook spent on Australian soil was not at Botany Bay, but at Cooktown.
