Also watching bits of the 1966 World Cup match between Germany and England. I don't think I fully appreciated it at the time.
At the end of my first year at university, the NUS offered a cheap holiday in Czechoslovakia. Part of the trip was in the High Tatras. I was not used to mountainous places so on the final day, when some went to climb really high places where you had to use a chain to pull yourself up, I sat in the lounge with one New Zealander from our group and about 15 Hungarians. I was a bit intimidated by the Hungarians - I knew nothing about Hungary being a runner-up in 1954 - and also not used to seeing Eastern Europe or Eastern Europeans at all. At the end of the match they all shook hands with me. One of the few occasions I have felt proud to be English - it's certainly taken a knocking in recent years.
