Big Gnawer

What an amazing beetle! I spotted this rose chafer on rough chervil before lunch. No dog roses left so it was ponderously making the most of the chervil. It's so big and heavy that the umbels were giving way under its weight. It seemed to be oblivious to me. Interesting that these beetles fly with their wing cases closed.

I Googled the etymology of its name. No luck. I reverted to my dictionary. Evidently its name means gnawer. Rose growers don't appreciate it gnawing their blooms. I've only seen and photographed one of these twice before.
