Saved

I am sure everyone has been waiting to hear the fate of the weir in the Eden at Appleby. I reported on this back in March. At the time there was a public consultation about whether to remove the weir because of safety issues. The result of the consultation was that the majority of local people wanted it kept. So it is saved. 

In today's local paper there are pictures of volunteers doing work on the weir in efforts to make it safer - they have removed a lot of loose boulders, filled in a hole in the centre, created a path and lots else. The work is ongoing. 

We decided to go down and have a look. It was looking picturesque in the sunshine. Quite a different picture from back in March and on such a lovely summer's day one can see why there was such a wish to save it. The trees are in full leaf, the banks covered in flowers. And there were a few people wandering by the river. I was quite mesmerised by the water flowing over the weir, Gordon was watching Grey Wagtails, we met a local lady who had come down to see if otters she has watched before were around. She told us about watching salmon leaping in the Autumn. The weir was worth saving it would seem. 

A lot of the flowers would appear to be escapees from the mill gardens - for example the Honesty I have put in extras.
