Day 87- A circuit in the local area to include one of the two plaques in Teddington- Edward Whymper( 1840-1911) Mountaineer. He began his working life as an engraver and illustrator. He first visited the Alps to make sketches for a book and became fascinated by the challenges of climbing the highest peaks. He led the first party to climb the Matterhorn but during the descent four members fell to their deaths. For the rest of his life he was persued not only with guilt over their deaths but rumours, almost certainly unfounded, that he was to blame. He lived in Teddington for the last few years of his life in a house that is now the Waldegrave Clinic which houses a variety of private health professionals.
