Made in Waihi
A very quiet day, supporting S who has had a bad day; probably side effects from some of the medications.
A short walk found a previously unseen manhole cover in Nixon Street, Newton, near the corner with Great North Road. The manufacturer was a small foundry in Waihi, the Waitete Foundry. The foundry melted down pig iron from Australia, and scrap iron from the local district, which included the farm where I spent the first 11 years of my life (in Waitekauri).
Mostly, they made fire grates, trolley wheels, and stove tops. The foundry was started post WWII and employed 15 workers. It was registered as a limited liability company in the 70s and closed about ten years later.
