Ehoumaki Roll

It's close of winter or beginning or spring in lunar calendar, called "Setsubun". We have some customs to get in lucky and to throw out bad luck.

These 10 years, people in almost all over Japan have Ehoumaki roll in Setsubun looking at a lucky direction of the year without speaking. Actually the custom started in Osaka where I was from. My father was a owner of a Sushi bar and I recalled the Ehoumaki custom re-started in '70's (people said it originally started long time ago). the fillings of my father's roll were nothing special - kanpyo, koyadofu, minced fish, and Egg, but they were all hand made. I loved to see how to make them when I was a child. Now my father is already retired, I cannot have his roll any more. I buy rolls at a department store every year, but I don't choose classic style. I still believe my father's roll is the best for me and respect his work.
