Not a riot..

..but a popular sport. Road bowling. Practised mainly by men ( there is a separate women's championship too) and very much part of the local scene. You have to be quite skilled. A piece of wet sod from the hedgerow marks the place on the road where each bowl lands. Cars have to stop and wait while a throw is in progress, of course, and then it's also quite a skill driving through the crowd managing not to knock anyone down. My lads used to play in a junior competition, but that was a while ago now.
