Make a wish.....
We went for a walk along the River Wharfe near Bolton Abbey to see the Bolton Stid prior to an afternoon session of the sofa for the Calcutta Cup!
The Bolton Strip is a small section of the River Wharfe where it narrows from about 25 foot to just under 6 foot. The water is very dangerous and has sadly claimed lives in the past. The current is so powerful that the narrow strip of water looks rather calm and just seems to calmly bubble, rather like a glass of champagne would bubble! The channel is so deep that the bottom has not yet been discovered. This is perhaps more to do with the current being so strong that nothing can get anywhere near the bottom to measure the depth. Being a geologist I was determined to understand the cause of the narrowing in the river. It turns out it is the result of lots of little pot holes growing in size and eventually linking together to form a channel that has been carved deeper and deeper by the fast water.
Along the way we came across this wishing log full of coins. I wonder how many of the wishes made have since come true?
