Cinnabar Moth caterpillars
Blipping often leads me on to Googling; for example, why 'cinnabar'?
Cinnabar is a brick red mineral which can be mined for its mercury content; the moth has this bright red colour on its wings. Cinnabar mineral is highly poisonous due to the mercury content, so I was amused while googling to see advertisements for an Estée Lauder 'Cinnabar Eau de Parfum'. Mother's day coming up soon?
The cinnabar moth lays its eggs on the common ragwort. These hatch into the yellow and black striped caterpillars which will feed on the ragwort leaves, often stripping it down to a bare stem.
As this photo was taken in our woodland, I shall be able to monitor the progress of the caterpillars.
