Reed warbler #59
Despite the reserve being officially closed, we took a chance and drove the 15 minutes to Moore Nature Reserve this morning. Apart from the official car park, there are lots of places nearby that you can park in, so we chose under a tree in the shade. At 8.45am it was already showing 25 degrees on the car temperature gauge, so I knew we wouldn’t be out for very long.
We started at the screen in Lapwing Lane, where sometimes you can see a kingfisher. No luck today, but we did come across this noisy reed warbler and sat for a few minutes watching the coots and moorhens and keeping one eye out in case any dragons landed nearby - they didn’t!
Then we walked up to the feeding station, obviously not being used at the moment and along the back of the old canal route. The nearer pathways were closed, but I think this is from earlier in the year when they were flooded. I can’t believe they have been chained up due to coronavirus.
There were far too many insects and horseflies for my liking in the woods, so despite it being cooler in the shade we soon reached Birchwood pool. Nothing much doing there either, so we headed back across the dog field towards the car, where we came across what I think is a female black tailed skimmer (see what you think - in extras).
We were back home for 10.30am both with several bites, which are quite irritating. I wouldn’t mind so much, but I did put on plenty of insect repellant in anticipation of a lot of bugs!
The rest of the day won’t amount to much I expect - it’s just too hot.....
