snow queen

the city is dressing up in white - no doubt about the season. This was in the morning in a small park in my neigbourhood, it has been snowing since. The white scenery made me think about the fairy tale of the snow queen, I had been reading when I was a child. I never quite understood this story, it always gave me a quite uncomfortable feeling I didn't like. Probably I didn't like the idea of people with cold hearts. (probably I was living in a fairy tale! ;))

In the Snow Queen story there is a boy who gets a splinter of a troll-mirror in his heart and his eyes. This magic mirror that has the power to distort the appearance of things reflected in it. It fails to reflect all the good and beautiful aspects of people and things while it magnifies all the bad and ugly aspects so that they look even worse than they really are. After the incident the boy's personality changes: he becomes cruel and aggressive. The snow queen enters the stage and abducts the boy to her castle, and only wants set him free if he can spell "eternity" with the pieces of ice in her palace. But luckily he his rescued by his girl friend who manages to get into the palace by a prayer that causes her breath to take the shape of angels!!! Then her tears manage to melt the splint in the boys heart and she makes the ice splinters dance so they form the word "eternity", and the end is quite happy. Or, is it? I don't really believe in it. All I know about cold hearted people is that it takes more than some tears to change them...
