Woody Wednesday (Wednesday 24th June 2020)

Woody Wednesday was singularly unsuitable for gardening, and when Refna arrived she was already suffering from the heat having been working in another garden first.

That being the case most of the morning was spent in the sanctuary of shade from the cotinus tree at the glass table, sampling the contents of the previous week's hamper, though some garden planning and discussion took place. We listened to some recordings of bird song on her phone in an attempt to identify the songs of the birds heard in the garden, including the wren, robin, thrush and blackbird, while a red kite and swifts flew overhead, among the more everyday gulls, jackdaws and crows.

The heat had brought this mallow into flower since the day before. Seen through a bit of a heat haze it is Lavatera × clementii 'Barnsley Baby',  a species born in Rosemary Verey's Barnsley garden, where Refna did some training.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Grateful Dead - To Lay Me Down  (American Beauty Outtake)(recorded September 1970, Wally Heider Studio, San Francisco CA)
I retreated to the study in the afternoon, with the cool of a large ceiling fan, and the Grateful Dead were the only feasible musical choice, and I replayed the CD from the oldest outstanding Uncut, from September 2013. It mostly featured live performances from various retrospective albums, but ended with this Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter song that didn't fit on the album American Beauty. Jerry Garcia re-recorded the song on his self-titled first solo album in 1972, whilst this eventually turned up in 1999 on a big box set called So Many Roads.
