At Anchor.

The anchor is a fairly common symbol on Scottish gravestones being a Christian symbol representing the hope of a safe anchorage in the afterlife. Anchors are also to be found on the graves of Masons, being a Masonic symbol for well-grounded hope.

Sometimes, however, as here, the anchor is an emblem of the trade of a dead mariner. This large beautifully carved granite gravestone in the old Newburgh graveyard marks the final anchorage of William Stephen Shipmaster who died in 1916 aged 79.
