Wessex

Memorial to the 43rd Wessex on Castle Hill in Mere.

Always assumed the hill was some sort of ancient hill fort but it turns out 'only' dates from 1253, when there was a  big catsle on the site,

It's somewhere I've been meaning to stop off for years, but usually go sailing past the exit from the 303! Wonderful to see summertime countryside under a blue sky in every direction after 3 months on a ship.
