One Way or Another
Dodged the showers this afternoon and decided to make use of our National Trust membership by going for a walk around Tarn Hows. Whereas in the past, we would have just rocked up and wandered where we liked, we now had to follow the new guidelines.
Before setting off we checked how busy the car park was likely to be. “Not” was the answer on the National Park website car park update page. Packed the waterproofs and camera as well as the now almost mandatory hand sanitiser. Car park was as empty as advertised and after scanning the NT membership card to get free parking we started off. Almost immediately, we see the signs advising of the need to keep two metres apart and then the one pictured suggesting we go round one way only to help with social distancing. As it happened, we barely saw anyone else on the way round apart from the incredibly selfish family with small children who obviously had no intention of moving over to let us past but just stood right in the middle of the path trying to control their wayward children whilst we were forced to take to the boggy ground at the edge of the Tarn to get round them. Sad to say, this seems to be a common trait in a certain type of person - only their needs matter and sod everyone else.
Went down into Coniston after the walk. Notwithstanding that it was a wet Tuesday afternoon, it was still a bit of a shock to see how quiet it was. Even on this sort of day you would normally expect to see quite a few people around but there was hardly anyone. Not surprising really as everywhere was shut, though the cafe was doing takeaway drinks. Over a couple of welcome coffees we learnt that they are expecting a large influx of holidaymakers at the weekend, when the rules are relaxed and caravan sites, pubs and restaurants reopen. Don’t think we will be in any rush to join them.
