As is the way with unwanted gifts, they usually get repackaged and passed on to someone else, and so it is with this. A gift from Germany some 75+ years ago; the Royal Engineers made it safe and gave it to the people of Chatham in 1987, just in case they had become bored of cannon and anchors. So here it is on display brightening up a public flower bed devoid of flowering plants.
Our most artistic piece of public art is still a silhouette of Charlie Chaplin cut from a flat sheet of metal.
