Independence Day
Today is the day we are “freed” from our homes and can go to the pub or to a restaurant or cafe. The media is, of course, hyping it up with dire warnings of drunken hooliganism, anti social behaviour and the inevitable return of lockdown when the virus returns as a result of such shenanigans.
Except......the British weather has decided this need not happen by making today grey, damp and generally miserable. After spending all day inside yesterday due to the heavy rain, we decided to take a walk into town in spite of the drizzle and can report that those pubs which were open (and we saw a couple with signs saying they’re not opening until August) seemed pretty quiet - certainly no queues outside. It would seem that people are not that desperate for a pint after all.
As I only frequent the pub a couple of times a year anyway, I certainly wasn’t going to head inside one now, but was cheered by the sight that one of the coffee shops was allowing you to sit in again, albeit still serving in takeaway cups. Very pleasant to sit on a comfortable chair, out of the rain, enjoying a latte and a bit of cake. Mrs C tried to take advantage of me photographing the scene in order to steal the cake, but I was able to wrest some of it back from her just in time.
