Mr Eternity
Mr Eternity (Arthur Stace) chalked the word Eternity in beautiful copperplate on Sydney pavements over 500,000 times from the early 1930s to the late 1960s. He had been a derelict until one night during the Depression when he went into St Barnabas church on Broadway for a handout and found God. For decades his identity remained a mystery.
Lawrence Johnstone made a terrific doco about him in 1994.
I’m not sure of the date of this memorial near his grave in Botany cemetery, but it is now tarnished.
Thanks for hosting Marlieske.
