A Secret Visitor
It is only when there is snow on the ground that you realise that the garden is a busy place during the hours of darkness. Foxes seem to be frequent visitors to the back of the house even if there is no food left out for them but there is some shelter where they can rest for a while.
Occasionally the odd urban fox strolls across the grass in daylight and takes a break from his labours. That is when I think urban is the wrong word. These are more urbane than urban with the coolly superior look they give when you try to hasten them along with a knock on the window.
By the afternoon the snow had vanished and with it all trace of our nocturnal visitor. No doubt the fox will be back tonight but there will be no evidence of his presence- unless it snows again.
