MONO MONDAY - ALONE

Alone : having no-one else present

Alone : unique; unequalled; unexcelled:
He is alone among his peers in devotion to duty.

You could say that a delivery driver is “alone” until he actually reaches someone’s house and rings the doorbell, or you could describe a particular driver as being “unequalled in his devotion to duty” and I think that both these statements are true about Vincent, our Waitrose delivery driver today.

He drives his refrigerated van on his own, and then unloads the groceries, again on his own - but then he rings the doorbell - and he is no longer alone - and for someone like Vincent, who obviously enjoys some banter and repartee, this is good.

Vincent is a personable young man, who has delivered to us before, so he knew when he saw our address that I was likely to take a photograph and he wasn’t quite as shy as he was the first time!

Is it possible to be devoted to duty when you are “just a delivery driver” - but who are we to make such a  derogatory statement about being “just” anything?  Where would we have been but for those like Vincent and the other cheerful and friendly delivery drivers, in our case, from Waitrose, in our present circumstances?

As a couple who are in the vulnerable age group, we have been most grateful to all those who have delivered not only food, but also gardening requisites and other things, including a selfie stick, jigsaw puzzles, books and flowers during the last four months and I would say that every single one of them was “unique, unequalled and unexcelled in their devotion to duty”.  They have put the needs of others before thinking of themselves and we are so thankful to each and every one of them.

So my subject for today’s Mono Monday challenge is Vincent - who, just after 8.00 a.m. arrived with a smile and a cheery word - so today, he can have his 15 minutes of fame on Blip and we want him to know that we are grateful, so although I don’t use Twitter that much, I have also tweeted @Waitrose, so that his bosses know how grateful we are.

I really do believe that we are often quick to criticise, but not half quick enough to praise, so Vincent gets 10 out of 10 and a Gold Star from us today for starting our day off well - and I will be sending a copy of my Blip to Waitrose, so that they are aware of what an asset he is to their team.

“We would worry less if we praised more;
     thanksgiving is the enemy
          of discontent and dissatisfaction.”
