Into the rainforest- St Kitts

Veronica, our self appointed " best guide in St Kitts" whizzed us around her homeland starting with the rainforest where she grew up. As a child she swung through vines like this..

She promised to explain the real St Kitts not the airbrushed version promoted by holiday operators.

Unemployment is 20 per cent and the country is bankrupt and there is no help for the unemployed. So how do they survive?
"Marijuana....once we grew sugar cane. "

We see a cageful of monkeys in one garden.
What for? We ask dreading the answer.
"Monkey meat very good."
We pass a field where men in dark blue overalls are working,

"Prisoners. They have to work. They get regular meals. Some prefer life in prison."
And so it went on.
Veronica one of 12 children but she says she can only afford three because women no longer have babies at home they have to go into hospital and that is expensive.
Meanwhile the five star hotels and golf courses are being built.
