The ruins of Cammo House (situated in a public park in the west of Edinburgh) can be very eerie; there's sadness in the slowly disintegrating splendour. The house in its heyday was said to have been the inspiration for the House of Shaws in Stevenson's Kidnapped.

In this morning's dancing sunshine and fast-moving weather, the doorway of the big house gave the impression that crossing the threshold might lead me into another dimension.
