Floating Bridge

This is the chain ferry which crosses the Medina river between East Cowes and Cowes. The first one was established in 1859. This is the ninth one in total (it's named No. 6 - the sixth to be owned by the IOW Council) and was installed in May 2017. It was initially plagued with technical issues and was suspended for many months, being replaced with a small foot passenger launch. Vehicles wanting to cross between the two towns had a ten-mile detour.
This chain ferry is one of the four largest in the country.
