Ragwort
K spent the afternoon clearing the paddock of Ragwort which is poisonous to all animals, even chickens, and if enough is eaten will cause cirrhosis of the liver and death. Animals with enough grazing will avoid it as it tastes so horrible. The danger is if it is cut and dried in grass for hay. It is a native plant with over 200 species and the Weeds Act of 1959 stipulates that an occupier of land may be ordered to control the spread of this plant.
Two more grass fields were mown yesterday and today the grass was lifted for silage and the clamp covered with sheeting and weighted down with old tyres.
