a bit of all that

Old and new

Presumably there was a time when Southwark Cathedral had some kind of landmark status, rising above the industrial dross around it. Today it seems to be a squatter, perched between the Thames, Borough Market, and the sky-scraper developments springing up at London Bridge. Is this a metaphor for the waning influence of spiritual institutions in the modern world? Well, I don't know, but I do know that the Cathedral grounds are still a very pleasant place to sit in your lunch hour. You can't say that about the Shard.
