Acanthus

It has been a very damp day, so I just walked round the streets, and discovered these plants on the edge of the pavement. They are very unusual flowers without actual petals and checking with the Gardeners' Encyclopedia I think they are acanthus - but I am happy to be proved wrong! They must be quite robust to survive on a busy pavement!
