Today marks 25 years since the Genicid u Srebrenici.
The wars in the Balkans in the late 20th century had a profound effect on my life’s path. Everything I did, where I went, where I ended up and my career have been affected by it. The Balkans is one of my favourite places in the world. I feel at home there. And even the things I don’t love about it I don’t love in the same way that one doesn’t love things about one’s home town. And Bosnia is one of the places I love the most. It’s said that, if one drinks the water outside the central mosque in Sarajevo, one can never not return there. I’ve made sure I drink every time. Just to make sure.
So, today, please make sure you remember the 8372 mostly men and boys who were massacred for being who they were. I wish I could believe that it will never happen again.
The photo is of lady’s mantel, it always looks so beautiful after the rain. It’s supposed to help “women’s problems”. I don’t think it can help the women who were left behind in Srbrenica, but I hope that they can find beauty after the rain.
