Drakelow Tunnels
Mr J, H and I went on a guided tour of Drakelow Tunnels this afternoon, hard to believe this is hidden just a few miles from home. It took 18 months in 1941-42 to build the 3.5 miles of tunnels. Originally used as a shadow factory by Rover, it produced parts for aircraft then later tanks. Half of the tunnels became a top secret government facility in 1961, where the British Government could operate from in the event of nuclear war, which continued in secrecy until the end of the Cold War in 1990.
The Drakelow Tunnels Preservation Trust took over in 1993 and began restoration, it’s now the largest underground space open to the public in the U.K.
