Basking
Butterbur leaves are a reliable place for observing insects; they seem to like them for basking. This Gatekeeper was my first of the year, just a day earlier than last year's. More surprisingly I found a Wren family had set up home in one deep leaf a little further up the valley.
Tomorrow I will be heading south of the river for the first time since lockdown, with a trip to the dentist being my first non-familial social interaction since March. But it does at least give me a chance to see if the Marbled White are out in their Shipley meadow.
