Friend or Foe?

I added two perennials (Bee Balm) and one annual (Parsley) to our Butterfly/Bee Patch. The three varieties of milkweed that we have growing there are loaded with honeybees and a few stray golden digger wasps and miner bees • Also in the patch is a Bug House which has not had any activity (we thought) until today. Who is this cow-faced insect? Is it a bee, a wasp or hover fly? The two of us have searched and searched all kinds of websites and cannot identify our dweller. Feel free to share your expertise if you know • We harvested the last of the broccoli and will be replanting soon for another crop in the Fall • It’s quite warm and humid with thunderstorms on tap this afternoon and evening • The fat cats are fast asleep in their preferred spots, and their Moms are trying to keep cool in front of fans • All is normal and quiet here.
