Basingstoke Canal
Went for a walk in Brookwood Country Park for the first time. It skirts the Basingstoke Canal which was built in 1794 to link the Thames Navigation at Weybridge to Basingstoke. It is 37 miles long and cost £154,000 to build - almost twice the estimated cost. Nothing changes! It fell into disuse and became derelict in the 1960s. It was reopened in 1991 after a restoration project initiated by the Basingstoke Canal Society, a voluntary organisation that works with Hampshire and Surrey County Councils to protect and promote the use of the canal.
