Gate to the Quadrangle

We had a short trip to St Andrews which turned out to be a bit of a waste of time but as I was parked close to St Mary ‘s College of the University I stopped to photograph the lovely old gate into St Mary’s Quadrangle with its Latin inscription. St Mary’s College was founded in 1539 so I imagine many famous and learned scholars will have walked these cobbled stones.

I couldn’t resist having a wander in to see the wonderful old Holm Oak (Extra) that I used to pass when I worked for the University but today the whole place was deserted.

The tree was planted around 1740 and with a girth of 12 feet it is the largest holm oak in Scotland and is quite a magnificent specimen.
