and well, that's that.
Thirty five years ago this region was in the grip of the storm of the century, the Blizzard of 1978 . It was the week that everything stopped and the world stood still. Snow wind and enormous waves crippled the state. The coast was hit incredibly hard and over 3000 cars were snowed in and stuck on Rt 128, a major highway. It snowed for 36 hours straight, with some reports of snow 4-5 ft deep and drifts of 27 feet! One hundred people perished and the storm damage was 2 billion dollars in today's cash.
The less intense storm this week is predicted to start slowly Thursday night. It will pick up intensity by Friday afternoon's commute and continue into Saturday. Things are coming together now on the computer models, we'll see if it pans out or if it's hype. It's probably time to think about preparations and some cozy food for the weekend. We're in the 1o-14 inch area. T & I love snow, so bring it on as long we're all home safe & sound.
I searched y old slide trays today and unearthed some Blizzard slide that I digitized quickly. Here's my dad and my friend B working on the driveway . The cars were snowed in and the roads white for over a week with drifts at every corner . There was a statewide ban on driving. Neighbors helped neighbors not unlike the days following 9-11. It was a beautiful but scary time with much devastation.
I miss my dad , he's been gone 15 years tomorrow.
For the Record,
This day came in damp and warmer with increasing clouds. I got out our heavy duty wool mittens, we didn't need them last year, but we just might need them soon.
My brother just sent me an email, our winter storm watch has been upgraded to a BLIZZARD WATCH
