Paps of Jura

A lovely day with P and H, as a by-product of being 'out west'. The main expedition was down the Taynish peninsula, with a walk in the nature reserve (see extra for the bio diversity in evidence), and then a trip down to Keillmore for a picnic. Keillmore is where the ferry used to go to Jura, from a Thomas Telford pier (see other extra). It's hard to imagine that this pier, at the end of a very long single track road, was the main gateway to Jura (and through Jura to Islay) rather than the ro-ro pier at West Loch Tarbert, as it is now. In the nineteenth century, the proximity of Jura to the mainland (compared with Islay) meant that access to Islay was via Jura, not vice versa. How the roads we travel have changed (as is the subject of a book I bought in Waterstones in Oban, and which I've just started reading).

In the evening, we enjoyed a roast dinner chez P and H, before heading back to the hotel full of food and fresh air.
